Story: Kennedy Ranges
Episode: Episode 2
Presenter: Emma George
Air Date: 10th July 2022
- The Kennedy Range is one of those often-overlooked locations as people head north for the headline acts of Broome and the Kimberley. It is a spectacular taste of what the Murchison / Gascoyne regions have to offer those willing to head inland and explore a little further.
- Known as Mundatharrda to local aboriginals, the Kennedy Range is a vast, elevated north-south sandstone plateau between 12 and 25km wide (and 75km long)
- The range was formed through compression which created the sandstone before it faulted and was uplifted. Subsequent erosion has reduced the plateau to 80m above the surrounding plains.
- The park offers those who love to camp or hike a wilderness-style experience and the chance to reconnect to nature.
- The most popular location within the park is Honeycomb Gorge, a rock face formed by wind and water spray from a seasonal waterfall above the cliff face.
- The best time to visit is winter after good rains. This results in the dusty red landscape bursting into life with a variety of wildflowers and plants.
- There are six walk trails and all are rated class 3, requiring a moderate level of fitness. Hikers should ensure that they are self-sufficient.
